I still use my 5 1/2 year old MacBook Pro for most personal stuff. No or minimal fan noise is very appealing to me. The forums tell me that this maddening aspect of my particular laptop is not easy to 'fix'. For example, if my PC laptop is plugged in, the fan always runs. I had to dip my toes back in the PC world for work and while some aspects are good, others, much less. I'm not a video person, at least not yet, so this isn't super relevant to me but it's great to know.

My take-away is, as of right now, for the price of an NV 30 series graphics card you might as well get a Mac mini to work on the H.265 8k clips.

Win 10 media player can decode and play with no issue. I'm sure it's something BlackMagic can address very soon. When I try the same on a windows laptop (Asus G14, AMD 4900HS & RTX2060 MQ) and Resolve Studio (17 beta 8), every time I import the media Resolve will crash. All of these unplugged and with no fan noise and no proxy. Once you add a slog-709 LUT it will drop a couple more frames but still workable in my opinion. It all worked very well! the 200Mbps clips are almost as snappy as editing A73 footage, and the 400Mbps ungraded is very responsive too.

I downloaded two 200Mbps 8k clips (no PP) and one 400Mbps 8k (Slog 3), all H.265 10bit 420, and tried to edit them on the M1 Air 8GB model using Davinci Resolve (the free version) on 4k timelines. Gordon Laing appears to be the only one that posted original footage right out of the A1, you can find his review and downloadable links here: Buy him a coffee if you found it useful!
